Art Journal Challenge - March 15, 2023

Earth Day Celebration - Part One.
The art journal challenge has returned. To get back into our art journaling we are going to create a page to celebrate Earth Day. This year the holiday falls on the 20th of March.
So dig out your journal and let's get started. The first part of the challenge involves painting your version of the earth and starting a small garden. The second part of the challenge will be to fill in around the earth.
Basically we are working freehand for most of the design. Open your journal and draw a 4" circle in the middle of the page. It doesn't have to be perfectly centered. (I traced around a 4" coaster.)

Get a paper plate ready for your palette, along with a cup of clean water, a towel or napkin, and a #12 round brush. (Royal® Majestic Round #4250-12)

Fill in the circle using DecoArt® Media Fluid Acrylics Cerulean Blue. Use a lot of water and go darker in spots and lighter in others.

Using Media Fluid Acrylic Phthalo Green-Yellow add some land masses. They don't have to be perfect in shape or geographically correct, just to give an idea of the earth.

Freehand a few flowers at that top using a #2 pencil. Add the words as shown below. Try to keep your lettering uniform. Fill in the flowers using Media Fluid Acylics Diarylide Yellow and Cadmium Red Hue for petals on two of the flowers and some Phthalo Green-Yellow and Sap Green for the leaves and stems. Be sure to use water to get lighter and darker sections. Use a towel to pull up excess water if needed. The third flower is based with Ameracna Acrylic Snow White. The white flower center is Diarylide Yellow and the yellow flower center is a touch of Snow White mixed with Cadmium Red Hue.

Once everything has dried I outlined using a Rotring Tikky Graphic 0.1 black pigmented ink pen. Outline the flowers, leaves, lettering and planet as shown in the photo below. The random lines that create 'rays' coming form the planet are done with Sharpy markers in various colors.

That completes part one.

Now for part two of the challenge... after you have finished part one the idea is to fill in the different sections radiating from the planet. The sections can be filled with whatever you feel fits the theme. Each section can be different or not, the choice is yours. Options are unlimited with things like stencils, stamps, stickers, fabric, jewelry, and more. You can use paints, pens, pencils ...whatever you desire. Let your imagination run wild. In two weeks with the finished page. Feel free to upload your finished page to pwmblogeditor@gmail.com and it will be included in the April 1 blog!
